There are a few reasons why I live in Japan and the Awa Odori is one of them. I can’t imagine not being able to jump in the car and head west every summer. I miss it already. There are plenty of photos of the dancers dancing everywhere so here are a few of them mostly not dancing. And a friend wearing a sheep mask.

Shikoku

Shikoku is probably my favourite place in Japan. It’s the first place I lived permanently in Japan, it’s fantastic for cycling, the people are wonderful, it’s home to the best festival I’ve ever been too, which I went to again this year, but I worry.

What happened in Tohoku in 2011 is predicted to happen again. In fact it is predicted for the whole Pacific Coast of Japan, including Shima and Minami Ise which I visited recently.

Despite the paranoia it’s a place I can’t imagine not revisiting again and again and one day moving back to.

Gifu

Gifu prefecture is a great place for cycling and since taking along my film camera on most rides I’ve started enjoying the scenery of rural Japanese life a lot more as well.

After returning from India I promised myself that I would try to see more of Japan, preferably by bicycle and with a camera. These are far from great shots – I have know idea how to take a good landscape – but it doesn’t matter. It’s the getting outdoors part that’s the most enjoyable.

I’m taking a week long trip to Shikoku next week to travel around both Kochi and Tokushima prefectures (I used to live in Tokushima) and to catch the wonderful Awa Odori for what I think will be my 5th time. I’ll be taking my Leicas, a huge Mamiya RB67 borrowed from Darren, and of course my bicycle(s).
